In an adaptation that embraces intervention and interruption, an ensemble of queer performers gather to embody Mae West’s 1927 controversial classic The Drag, never leaving contemporary collective queer sensibilities and consciousness behind. A communing with the queer past in the queer present to usher in a queer future, complete with drag balls, ingenues, the Time Warp, downward facing dogs, and other sexual inversions.

Refocus your attention to just beyond the baseline. Here lies the gestural interplay of tennis’ ball people. Performing hidden, rigorous labor in professional tennis these speedsters are the support system to the efficiency of matches. This monumental dance calls attention to the subtle and off-kilter choreography of tennis’ unannounced workers. Highlighting their agility, absurdity, and queer movement this visual fantasia will shift your idea of “champion.”

By expanding traditional, heteropatriarchal masculinity into a practice of gentleness and connection, Dream Sweet, Rough Man uplifts possibilities for feminist queer masculinities to take root in men’s bodies and move through the world. We invite the high school hunk, 80s rockstars, frequenters of gay clubs and coffee shops, memories of trans boyhood, and ragged denim desires to play together, building options through which embodied manhood can thrive. Using dance and fashion to disrupt common masculine narratives, this show breaks down barriers which prevent masculine connection, moving towards more intimate, authentic and integrated manhoods.
